Erg Chigaga is a vast sand sea in the far south of Morocco, about 60 km beyond the village of M’Hamid at the end of the Draa Valley. Unlike Merzouga, it cannot be reached by paved road, which keeps it wild and quiet.
How to get there
From Zagora or M’Hamid the last part of the journey is by 4×4 on desert tracks (around 2 hours), crossing dry lakes and rocky plains. That off-road drive is part of the adventure.

What makes Erg Chigaga different
Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s largest sand sea, with dunes that stretch for around 40 km and rise to roughly 60 metres. Unlike Merzouga, there is no tarmac road to the dunes: the last stretch from M’Hamid el Ghizlane crosses stony plains and dry lake beds by 4×4. This isolation is exactly why travellers choose it: fewer camps, very little light pollution and a real feeling of remoteness.

- Time: allow at least 3 days from Marrakech; 4 days is more comfortable.
- Vehicle: a 4×4 with an experienced driver is essential for the off-road section.
